James Burke

Grant Writer
Jim marks 20 years in the nonprofit community in May 1988
when, after answering an ad in The New York Times, he became
a donor researcher at the YMCA of Greater New York. Since
then, he has worked at a very broad range of organizations,
including Center for Constitutional Rights; Deafness
Research Foundation; Edison Schools, Inc.; NAACP Legal
Defense and Education Fund; South Street Seaport Museum;
Robert A. Taft Institute of Government; and United Negro
College Fund.
In addition to being able to find out all sorts of
information on current, potential, and lapsed foundation,
corporate, government, and individual donors, Jim is also an
accomplished writer. While most of his experience has
focused on writing grant proposals, he also has written
and/or edited: interim and final reports; solicitation
letters; concept papers; annual reports; newsletters;
informational brochures; many types of correspondence; and
the occasional speech. And in some cases, Jim oversaw the
design, production, and mailing of these works of art.
A native of Brewster, New York and, just like the town’s
other famous resident, Ann Marie in That Girl, Jim moved to
New York City after high school with dreams of becoming an
actor. After attending the American Academy of Dramatic Arts
and bopping around on the fringes of the theatre community,
he eventually came to his senses, gave up acting, and
returned to college, receiving an English degree (with a
concentration in writing) at Hunter College. In addition,
Jim is a member of the National Association of Professional
English Majors, based in Lake Wobegon, Minnesota..
