Michael T. Marino

Development Director - East
The majority of Michael’s professional career has been
spent in the non-profit sector and includes over a decade of
experience in fundraising. Having started out working as a
theatrical stage manager and company manager, Michael
quickly moved into organizing fundraising events. He worked
with Miller, Zeichik and Associates (MZA) where he was part
of a production team responsible for producing the annual
AIDS Walk and Dance-a-thon events in multiple cities across
America. Michael then spent two years at Gay Men’s Health
Crisis (GMHC) as a Development Officer in their annual
giving campaign, focusing on cultivating, soliciting and
renewing donors who gave the organization annual gifts
between $1,000 and $25,000. After that, he joined Broadway
Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (BC/EFA) as their first ever
Associate Director of Development. During his four years at
BC/EFA, Michael grew their major donor campaign (gifts of
$1,000 or more) from 100 donors giving approximately
$125,000 to 350 donors giving nearly $500,000 – a 300%
increase. He also was responsible for creating their
website, donor newsletter, and planned giving society.
Michael made a strategic move to temporarily leave the world
of fundraising and took a position as the Associate Director
at New York University’s (NYU) Center for Health, Identity,
Behavior and Prevention Studies (CHIBPS), a behavioral
research center that conducts formative and intervention
based research in the areas of health, identity, and disease
prevention, with an emphasis on the HIV and drug abuse
epidemics. One of CHIBPS’s principal missions is to identify
and promote strategies to prevent the spread of these
epidemics and to improve the lives of people living with
these conditions. Michael’s research on the differences in
HIV education methods between New York City and London has
been cited in numerous publications, including the New York
Times. Michael spent six years at NYU and was promoted twice
during his time there, first to be the Administrator and
Chief Budget Officer for the Department of Applied
Psychology at the Steinhardt School of Culture Education and
Human Development and then to be the Director of
Administrative Services and Facilities for the Steinhardt
School.
Prior to joining Point, Michael made his return to
fundraising as the Director of Major Gifts for the Empire
State Pride Agenda, New York State’s LGBT civil rights and
advocacy organization, where he was responsible for the
stewardship, cultivation and solicitation of gifts over
$1,200.
Michael is a native New Yorker and currently lives in
Manhattan’s West Midtown area (affectionately known as
Hell’s Kitchen). He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Pace
University and in 2006 was honored by his Alma Matter as a
“Pace Legend” for creating and organizing the school’s LGBT
student group while he was a student. Michael also has a
Masters of Public Administration from NYU’s Robert F. Wagner
School of Public Service and currently serves as the
Executive Vice President of the Wagner Alumni Association at
NYU.
